The greatest gift…
Posted in: UncategorizedLauren Faith Miller was born on Monday, May 19th at 5:01 pm. She weighed 6 lbs 14 oz.
As great a gift as it was to bring her home on Wednesday, we received an even greater gift from our oldest daughter Morgan who is five. Morgan’s most prized possession in the world is her baby blanket or “pinky” as she calls it. It has been her one necessity her entire life. Now that she is five, she no longer carries it around with her, but you can be sure that you will find it in her bed every night, without fail. She simply doesn’t sleep without it. It isn’t negotiable.
We arrived home from the hospital early on Wednesday afternoon. Morgan and Ashlyn spent about 30 minutes admiring Lauren sleeping in her car carrier and enjoying seeing us again. Suddenly Morgan disappeared back into her room. Before any of us had even realized she was gone, she came running back into the living room, “pinky” in hand. Without a word, she placed her “pinky” into the baby carrier. She stood back and said in her softest voice, “I want you to have this.” Morgan, after only knowing her sister for a few hours, had given away her most prized possession. We we speechless. It was beautiful.
As a parent, the greatest gift we can give our kids is teaching them to love others even when it comes at great personal cost to themselves. This week, Morgan gave us a gift that I won’t ever forget.
