Excited about what God is doing…

Church IT Jesus Freaks are a fun bunch.  We had a great time at the Dallas Church IT open lunch today.  15 folks from church and para-church organizations throughout Dallas joined together to talk about the future of our ministry together.  We are tentatively setting September as the next “full-day round table” and each person was challenged to seek out another ministry in the Dallas area and bring them along.  It was fun to hear all of the great technical discussions going on at the table… from social networking, virtualization, SAN solutions, web platforms, ChMS solutions, wireless… it was all good stuff.

The best things about my job are getting to interact with people who love Jesus and getting to share Jesus with those who don’t know Him yet.  Today I got to hang out with people who are geeks like me AND love Jesus.  That’s greatness.

Dallas Church IT open lunch this Friday

The large church IT round-table that we held here at Watermark back in May was a big success, but frankly we want to expand the reach of our IT discussions to Dallas ministries of all shapes and sizes.  This Friday, June 27th, we will have our IT gathering open to all church and para-church organizations in the Dallas area.  The main meeting for this lunch is to talk about how we can get more local ministries involved in our community.  This is a great opportunity to share information, network, and talk about how we can use technology to further the cause of Christ in Dallas.  Feel free to invite friends that are involved in IT ministry.

The lunch will be held at Gloria’s in Addison at 11:30ish. For more information and to RSVP for lunch, email us at IT@watermark.org.

Three Little Girls

Sweetness….

Brutally Awesome

As I was leaving the Watermark offices today, one of my staff buddies and I were talking about what it’s like to be new father.  It was a fun conversation about how hard it is, but at the same time so very very sweet.  Over the last several days, my body has taken a beating from being sick.  That coupled with a lack of sleep has made the fog of parenthood even more souplike.  As we talked I mentioned that the process is “brutally awesome”  Seems like a good description.  One one hand, it has been over three years since we have had a newborn in our house.  How quickly we forget just how many diapers there are to change and how many bottles need washing.  Of course, I get an automatic vacation from the hard work each day when I get to leave for work…  While I am there having great conversations with other adults, there are diapers being blown out, a 3 year old decorating the hallway walls with crayons, laundry piling up, arguments between the “big sisters” to be worked through, and more and more bottles. Brutal.

But on the other hand, there are the times when little Lauren spends the evening sleeping in my lap.  Opening her eyes and wrapping her little fingers around my pinky.  And then she smiles.  What newborns are dreaming about that makes them smile like they do is unknown to me, but just maybe they have sweet knowledge of their creator that we have long forgotten.  So beyond the cries, the diapers, the bottles, and the sleepless nights, there is an ever present reminder that we have always been made in God’s image, being knitted together in our mother’s womb.  We truly are fearfully and wonderfully made.  His works are wonderful.  I know that full well.  And that is amazingly awesome.

VMware, Arena, the 3G iPhone, overqualified, and other randoms

This week has been nuts… really nuts.  Filled up with meetings surrounding virtualization, SANs, a lunch with VMware, a lunch with Dell/EqualLogic, and various VAR meetings.  Also we are wrapping up a relaunch of our main Watermark.org site which now will sit on top of Typo3 for the CMS.  On Friday, I kicked off a new web project to integrate our Arena system with Unifier, which is a product of the Pursuant Group.  The goal is to fully integrate the Arena system with Unifier, which is a social networking, blogging, and communications tool.  We really want to move our church communications back to the people, and allow simple ways for small groups and ministries to communicate effectively.  Last week, David Drinnon had an interesting post concerning the church and social networking.  Basically, I agree that there are controlled and uncontrolled aspects.  What we are hoping to accomplish gives us the power of a social network within the controls and administration of Arena.  Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

On a completely different topic, the expected 3G iPhone announcement is just days away.  The big question… just how many of these devices will show up on my desk the same day they are available for sale?  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of my iPhone.  I think it is a killer device.  Still, we’re going to let our staff know not to expect immediate configuration of their new toy.  Besides, we need to keep it and play with them for a while. =)

And now for something even more completely different.  We have talented people on our staff.  I’ve mentioned before that the Lord keeps bringing overqualified folks to us.  That’s great stuff and here is a recent example.  Last Friday, I was passing by our main receptionist desk.  Fridays are typically slow days so the phones aren’t ringing off the hook.  As I walked by, I noticed our new receptionist was reading a book and making notes.  Now this wasn’t a little book… it was huge.  It had lots of big words in very small print.  I stopped and asked her about it.  “Oh” she said, “It’s Gruden’s Systematic Theology, I’m re-reading it.  I read it once for a class I was taking, but I’m going through it again.”  So there you have it, our receptionist,  RE-READING a book that makes many seminary students’ heads spin.  Not only that, but she is a great receptionist to boot.  Overqualified and awesome.  But knowing that God is a big as He is, why should that suprise me?
