Michael W. Smith Concert

The Band at Watermark
Shannon and I had a great time Friday night at the Michael W. Smith concert at Watermark. I’ve seen him several times in different large venues, but this was a better “scaled down” experience. The event was a fund raiser for Trinity Christian Academy, and even though I expected that the place would be packed, there were enough seats still available on Friday for Shannon and I to be able to sit in the lower section very close to the stage.
This time, Smitty brought a three piece band to back him up, all very talented individuals. I don’t have all of the names, but here is a pic that he posted to his blog from the “green room”.
The show had several of the songs from the new album “A New Hallelujah” which I wasn’t overly familiar with. Then again, many of the songs that I know well are from my high school days back in the late 80s. Apart from “Friends are Friends Forever” (a given), much of the material was from the past 10 years or so. Michael has moved from a “concert” approach to a really well blended time of corporate worship. It did seem to be confusing to the audience at times though, because the people seated around us seemed unsure about whether they were supposed to sing along, or sit and listen. I also have to say that this was one of the few concerts that I’ve ever sat down for the majority of the time. Demographics were a bit interesting as well. Since this was a fundraiser for a christian school, most of the people in attendance seemed to be either a) students or b) parents of students. Made me wonder if Smitty still connects with the high school kids as well as he connected with me when I was that age. Some part of me doubts that to be the case, but the energy in the room seemed VERY mellow.
One thing I respect about seeing Smitty in concert is how he takes time to “preach” and puts the importance of a relationship with Christ at the center of his message. Micheal W. Smith loves Jesus… I had a good time as he lead us in worship on Friday night. As far as I’m concerned, that makes for a great evening.
