Why Water Matters…
Posted in: Africa, social justiceWater matters. It’s the basis of all civilization. Throughout history, communities have been built around access to clean water. But today, millions of people are without this basic necessity. Consider the facts…
- Every 15 seconds, a child dies because of water-related illness. 5,000 children 5 years and younger die every day.
- One-sixth of the world population doesn’t have access to clean, safe water.
- Contaminated water kills 2.2 million people annually — a death-toll equivalent to 20 jumbo jets crashing every day.
- 90% of all diseases around the world are caused by unsafe drinking water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene.
One well with safe, clean, water can change the life expectancy, health, and education of an entire community. People in rural Africa spend an average of 26% of their time fetching water – a task often given to women and school-aged girls. 40 billion working hours are spent carrying water each year in Africa. To contrast this, I just spent less than one minute walking to my kitchen to get a cup of clear, perfectly safe drinking water. Access to water and disease caused by poor water quality keep entire people groups trapped in poverty.
So what can we do about it? Every year, Americans spend $447.5 billion on Christmas. Think about how much your own family is spending this year, and pray about how you might steward some of those resources toward God’s Kingdom. In many cases, for less than $2000, broken wells can be restored to working condition and brand new deep water wells that will provide an entire village access to safe water can be built for $15,000. The future of an entire people group for less than what most of us spend on an automobile.
Watch this video. Then stop, think, and pray about what you can do this Christmas.
